SAULT STE. MARIE — For the first time in years, Sault Area Public Schools may not have to borrow money to make it through a fiscal year. Business Operations Director Amanda Matheson told the Sault Schools Board of Education Monday night that current projections do not show any months with a negative cash balance in 2017-18. That bucks a roughly decade-long trend in which the district had at least one month per year — sometimes more — where finances were tight enough to force administrators to borrow from the state to make ends meet. However, the board did approve a resolution allowing Matheson and Superintendent Tim Hall to seek a loan of up to $500,000 from the state if an unexpected financial problem arises. Such a move would require the signature of Board President Dan Smith and Secretary Melissa Pingatore. “Having you approve this tonight will allow us to (borrow) at any point during this fiscal year,” Matheson said. “Obviously, we’ll be in communication with you via email in the event that we get to that situation. But we are going to try not to.” She warned that the district could face a higher interest rate than in the past if it needs to borrow this year. “The only way we can do a traditional state aid note, which is tax exempt to the lender, is for us to be able to show at some point during the year that we would have a negative cash balance,” Matheson said, “and at this point in time I was unable to prepare a cash flow statement that would show us going negative.” Board President Dan Smith complimented Matheson and Hall for their financial diligence, saying the district is “not around the corner but we’re right at the corner.” “It shows that yourself and Dr. Hall have done what we’ve asked,” Smith added. The board approved Sault Schools’ 2017-18 budget in June.

TORONTO – The Progressive Conservatives have won a provincial byelection in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., taking the seat away from the governing Liberals. Ross Romano beat out NDP candidate Joe Krmpotich, and Liberal Debbie Amaroso placed third, according to preliminary results Thursday night. The riding had been held by former Liberal cabinet minister David Orazietti since 2003, until he announced in December he would step down, prompting the byelection. Orazietti had been a successful politician, winning nearly 60 per cent of the vote in the 2014 election, with the PC candidate at the time coming in a distant third. This time, it was the Liberal candidate, Amaroso, who trailed well behind. The Progressive Conservative win doesn’t change the balance of power in the legislature, but this is the second riding the PCs have taken from the Liberals in a byelection since 2014. It follows the party’s victory in Scarborough – Rouge River last fall. In a victory speech in Sault Ste.
